Nature Scavenger Hunt
After reading the book The Empty Lot by Dale Fife, we will be discussing the kinds of wildlife that we have observed around our homes and school yard this week. We will then split into groups and do a photo scavenger hunt around the school yard and playground to capture some of these aspects of wildlife. I would like to ask for a few parent volunteers to come in just to help students manage the cameras and focus attention on appropriate material.
Students will then back up their observations with information that they will be given time to research as a class. The photos will be combined onto a slideshow, and collectively we will be able to make our own digital story which will showcase observations and hard work. When we are finished, I plan to post the digital story to this blog for everyone to see.

Beginning of Nature Unit
Over the next few weeks we will be starting a nature unit to learn about our environment and how our actions affect the spaces we live in. Throughout this unit we will start our learning about plants and animals. We also will be taking "nature walks" around our school yard to observe components of wildlife in a local setting. At home this week, students should take a look around their yard to see what kinds of wildlife lives or plays there. Examples include kinds of trees, squirrels, birds, grasses, etc. Each student should make these observations and come in Wednesday prepared to discuss the things they saw.

Welcome to our Classroom!
Welcome to 2nd grade! I will be updating this blog on a weekly basis to keep you involved in our classroom activities. Feel free to comment or ask questions on any entry. I'm excited to get to know each of you in the upcoming months. This year we will be learning some fun games to help us out in math, share some of our favorite books, and explore through science. Throughout the year we will be learning about nature and the environment outside of our classroom, and we will be involved in a big nature unit during the spring.
Throughout the year I'd like to ask for some parent volunteers to help us out each week as we participate in centers. We will also have opportunities for parent involvement as we take field trips and have classroom holiday parties.
I look forward to having a great year!
